Raleigh General Hospital Improves Patient Experience for Labor and Delivery

June 23, 2026

Beckley, W.Va. (June 23, 2026) – Raleigh General Hospital is excited to take a step toward a more family-centered C-section experience by now offering clear drapes during C-section deliveries when medically appropriate.

This option gives families the opportunity to see their baby’s first moments while our surgical team continues to maintain a safe and sterile environment. For parents, even a small change like this can help make a C-section feel more personal, connected, and centered around their birth experience.

At Raleigh General, we believe every birth is special whether it happens in a delivery room or an operating room and we are honored to be part of these unforgettable moments with our patients and their families.

"Every birth story is unique, and we want mothers to feel connected to their experience regardless of how their baby is delivered," said Dr. Rae Bailey, OB/GYN and Department of Women & Children Chairperson "Clear drapes allow families to witness one of life's most important moments while ensuring the highest standards of safety for both mother and baby."

Research and patient feedback continue to demonstrate the importance of maternal involvement during cesarean deliveries. During a recent capstone project, exploring patient preferences surrounding C-section experiences, more than 75% of respondents indicated they would prefer the option of a clear drape during delivery.

For mothers undergoing a cesarean section, the experience can sometimes feel different from what they envisioned. Unlike vaginal deliveries, mothers are often unable to immediately witness the birth and may feel disconnected from those first moments. Clear drapes help bridge that gap by allowing mothers to see their baby's first breath, first cry, and first introduction to the world.

The option also supports the principles of the "golden hour" which is the critical first hour after birth that promotes bonding, skin-to-skin contact, and successful breastfeeding initiation. By helping mothers feel more engaged in the birth experience from the very beginning, clear drapes can contribute to a more positive and memorable delivery experience.

Fathers and support persons also benefit from the enhanced visibility, allowing families to share the excitement and emotion of welcoming their newest family member together.

The addition of clear drapes reflects Raleigh General Hospital's ongoing commitment to patient-centered care and creating meaningful experiences for families throughout their healthcare journey.
