Raleigh General Hospital Names 2020 Mercy Award Winner
August 04, 2020
Cheryl Mitchem recognized for demonstrating compassion and unwavering commitment to helping others.
Beckley, W.Va. (August 4, 2020) – Raleigh General Hospital recently announced that Cheryl Mitchem has been recognized as the hospital’s 2020 Mercy Award winner. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of LifePoint Health’s hospitals who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.
The Mercy Award is an annual recognition program established in 2002 to honor the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, LifePoint’s founding chairman and chief executive officer. The award is considered the highest honor a LifePoint employee can receive.
“At Raleigh General Hospital, we share LifePoint’s commitment to making communities healthier, and we recognize this is supported by the good work and service of our employees on and off the job,” said Matt Roberts, President & CEO of Raleigh General Hospital. “We are extremely proud to recognize Cheryl Mitchem for her efforts on behalf of our patients and our community. She goes above and beyond each and every day to ensure that every person she encounters receives the highest level of care and compassion.”
The decision to choose Cheryl as our 2020 Mercy Award winner reflects in her work with numerous community charities and additional contributions she makes while at work. From serving on committees that provide basic needs for local children to aiding in the fundraising process for Alzheimer’s research, Cheryl is unmatched.
One clear example of her love and dedication for helping others was recently demonstrated when she used her networking skills through the Shriners to aid an expectant mother/coworker. During a routine ultrasound it was discovered this expectant mother’s unborn child would require foot surgery once born. Cheryl’s work and influence with the Shriners resulted in complete funding for the surgery of this baby. This example is only one of many as evidenced by her nomination ballot.
Even during this pandemic Cheryl continues to work unselfishly by volunteering her free time to help feed the homeless and work with her local church to build villages and supply educational needs to third world countries.
Each hospital winner, including Cheryl, will be considered for LifePoint’s 2020 companywide Mercy Award. The companywide winner will be announced this summer and honored during a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., in October, to which Cheryl and all hospital winners are invited to attend.
